Otto Glaus: Franziskushaus (today: International Campus Olten (student housing)), 1964D– 1969

  • The complex consists of several rectangular cubes on the ground plan, which are staggered horizontally and vertically in a variety of ways and are interrupted by diagonal lines in the area of the chapel. The façade is characterized by untreated exposed concrete with a board formwork pattern and regularly arranged windows, supplemented here and there with finely crafted sculptural concrete elements. This creates a functional, sober and at the same time sculpturally differentiated appearance.

  • Under cantonal monument protection since 2012. Planned as a Franciscan monastery, the building was converted directly into a religious training center due to the declining number of members of the order, later sold and used as a student residence until 2016. It has been vacant since then, threatened by decay and marked by vandalism. There even have been several fires in the building, but the current owner did nothing about it. In March 2024, it was at least decided to fence in the building to put an end to the vandalism (last updated on February 2, 2025).
