The complex was built in celebration of the 25th anniversary of India's independence. Its monumental shapes and high tech appearance were supposed to represent the rapid development and modernization of the country. The lattice was rendered in cast-in-place concrete and referenced the traditional architectural element “jali”, essentially latticed stone screens with ornamental, sometimes geometric patterns. Just like the “jali”, these elements served the purpose of protecting the interior from direct sunlight without interfering with air circulation.
