The complex was built in celebration of the 25th anniversary of India's independence. Its monumental shapes and high tech appearance are supposed to represent the rapid development and modernization of the country. The lattice is rendered in cast-in-place concrete and references the of the traditional architecture element “jali”, essentially latticed stone screens with ornamental, sometimes geometric patterns. Just like the “jali”, these elements serve the purpose of protecting the interior from direct sunlight without interfering with air circulation.

Despite a petition and a court battle fought by Raj Rewal, the Hall of Nations (pictured) has been demolished in April 2017.
