Jacques Liger-Belair: Clarisses Sisters Unity Chapel, 1965?–1967

  • Yarze, Lebanon, Show on map

  • This church, which belongs to the convent of the Clarisses Sisters in Yarze, has a special design: the walls are round, the roof surface is a hyperbolic paraboloid surface and a geometric bell tower rises diagonally from the middle of the building. The church is entered from two sides. There is an entrance for the sisters and an entrance for external visitors.

The church is finished in formwork-rough concrete. The roughness of this material is counterbalanced by the warm wood of the pews and doors. Natural light enters the interior of the church through a slit between the walls and the roof as well as between the walls of the bell tower, illuminating the altar in particular.

  • In use. Damaged by missile impact left of the altar (last updated on September 12, 2024).
