  • A church where architecture seems to merge with sculpture is St. Mauritius in Wiesbaden. The sculptor Otto Herbert Hajek arranged the forecourt, the façade and the interior of the church. This is recognizable for example by the abstract reliefs on the forecourt refering to the Stations of the Cross. In the forecourt, a free-standing three-sided sculptural concrete bell tower decorated with a massive relief is welcoming the visitor. With a height of 20 meters, it towers remarkably above the 12 meters high church building. The church’s entrance is protected by an overhanging roof and lateral edgings. Due to the few window openings, the building appears closed in on itself. Above the entrance, however, a band of light by the glass artist Hans-Georg Schleifer begins. It is a colored glass mosaic which extends to the south side at the level of the altar, where it is widest.

The interior, like the exterior, is defined by the white concrete. Geometric shapes stretch across the façade in various sizes, individual parts are accentuated with yellow surfaces. When sunlight shines in, this is broken up by the strong colors of the glass mosaic (blue, red, orange).
