PROJECT DETAILS

George Finch: Brixton Recreation Centre, 1971D–1985

  • London, Great Britain, Show on map
  • #REC #Western Europe
  • As part of a large scale redevelopment scheme the center includes among other things swimming pools, gymnasia, squash courts, and a large shopping area. It was originally planned to be part of a larger system of raised walkways, adopting the Smithson's idea of "streets in the sky". The adjacent International House high rise is part of the project as well.

  • Various finishes are being obscured, brickwork flooring overclad with vinyl. Concrete soffits hidden by suspended ceilings. Brick walls covered by plasterboard walls. The original pedestrian route through the site has been truncated. Grade II heritage listed since 2016. Special thanks to Kate and Sean Macintosh.
