Josef Lackner: Maria Annunciation (Maria Verkündigung) Glanzing, 1969C–1970

  • Walled between residential edifices and facing a bustling thoroughfare, the church's remarkable and impeccably balanced features often evade casual observation. Its striking crown-like roof pays homage to ‘Christkönig,’ and possibly drawing inspiration from Lackner's Tyrolean mountain routes. Unlike typical modern church skylights designed to diffuse and soften light, these elements boldly capture and project gated shadows onto the church's walls and floor, heightening the sensation of an external presence infiltrating the temple's facade.
Beyond the intricately angled ceiling, decorative embellishments within the church are sparse. However, one area that undoubtedly captured Lackner's attention is the uniquely fashioned seating. Departing from traditional pews, these standalone steel chairs exude the essence of mid-century design icons, their sleek profiles offering a seamless fusion of functionality and aesthetic refinement.
