Reinhard Brockel / Erich Müller: Augsburger Hotel Tower "Corncob" (Hotelturm "Maiskolben"), 1971C–1972

  • With the "Kongress am Park" building as neighbour, the 115 meter high tower (with antenna 167 meter) is also located directly at the Wittelsbacher Park and is the highest building in Augsburg! The idea was to construct a hotel building in addition to the planned congress hall in order to develop an attractive conference centre. In less than 2 years the tower was completed and ready to move in. The hotel, apartments and, for some years now, Radio Klassik are located on 35 floors.

A central supply core on the inside forms the backbone of the tower, the architects tried to create a contrast to the otherwise rather sterile and austere looking buildings. With success, each balcony forms a further bulge, the overall picture is characterized by a lightness and is popularly known as corncob.

  • After the building changed buyers several times, the Dr. Ebertz & Partner Group from Cologne bought the hotel area for 12 million DM in January 2000. For 70 million DM, the hotel area was completely renovated. The owners of the apartments on the floors above also renovated. In 2016 the hotel area was sold to the Berlin company "Hotels by HR".
