  • This college is a memorial to Sir Winston Churchill and his belief in a scientific future. The requirement was a college for 60 fellows and 540 students. In the corner of the sloping site is a group of twenty Fellows’ flats, which was the first stage of the building programme, completed in 1962. Construction is load bearing brickwork with brown facings, fascias are copper with Iroko timber windows. The main group of buildings are laid out with an irregular open space surrounded by residential blocks. All blocks are linked by covered walkways characterised by a consistent elevational treatment, brought together by limiting the basic materials to brick, concrete and teak. Load bearing brickwork is combined with concrete beams and cantilevers and these structural forms contribute to the basic elements of the design.

  • In use. Since 1993 a “Grade II” heritage listed building (last updated on March 4, 2024).
