Walter Maria Förderer: Peace Church (Friedenskirche), 1966?–1971

  • Monheim, Germany, Show on map
  • #REL #Western Europe
  • It is often joked that the Friedenskirche in Monheim was the Swiss architect's attempt to bring the Alps to the Rhine. A complex exposed concrete building, more sculpture than church. The traces of the formwork and geometric shapes and bodies create the exterior and interior. The 23 meter high bell tower forms the highest point of the ensemble.  His idea: a community centre with integrated church space, which is to be used flexibly.

  • In use. Heritage protected. Partial renovations on the façade.
