In 1963, an open architectural competition was held for the main church of the Järvenpää parish. It was won by architect Erkki Elomaa. The church, designed in the brutalist style, was completed in 1968 and is constructed entirely of exposed concrete. In addition to the 625-seat church hall, it houses a smaller chapel for worship services as well as offices and storage rooms on the ground floor. Built on a slope, the complex takes advantage of the natural differences in elevation to organize the individual functional areas into staggered rectangular concrete volumes. The bells hang in an open, cubic frame on the roof, giving the building a striking sculptural silhouette.
Inside, the church hall displays a multi-layered interplay of concrete textures: the load-bearing structures show the pattern of the board formwork, while the wall surfaces are infilled with square, silky-polished concrete slabs whose designed recesses and indentations enliven the material. The cool gray tone of the architecture is contrasted by the warm-toned wood of the ceiling, the altar railing, and the pews. Against a pine background above the altar hangs a wooden crucifix created by Erkki Eronen. Windows of various sizes and the rhythmic structure of the concrete beams create a varied interplay of light, contributing to the design of a devotional atmosphere.
