Camden Town Department of Architecture / Neave Brown: Alexandra and Ainsworth Road Estate, 1968?–1978

  • London, Great Britain, Show on map

  • The structure effectively blocks off the noise from the adjoining railroad tracks, with the apartments opening up on the other side to a footpath. The building transforms the traditional British terrace houses and was an alternative to the residential towers, which were hotly disputed at the time.

  • Renovated after a campaign in 1989, since 1993 a “Grade II*” heritage listed building. Association active in its maintenance and preservation.

In February 2024, the status was changed from blue to red-blue because a planned replacement of the heating system poses a threat to the original appearance of the building complex at the time. Instead of the heating integrated into the concrete walls, radiators are to be installed on the walls in the apartments. The residents doubt the effectiveness (keyword: mold formation) and complain about the resulting interference with the original design, which is intended to offer the residents as much space as possible (last updated on February 21, 2024).
