Gillespie, Kidd & Coia: St. Peter’s Seminary, 1953D–1966

  • A striking example of the widespread influence of Le Corbusier’s oeuvre: Here, we can see overtones of his La Tourette priory and the round arches used in the Jaoul Houses. The priory was only used for 14 years and then served as an institution for drug addicts and for many years now has been one of the most-frequently posted ruins on the corresponding fanzines in the Internet.

  • The St. Peter’s Seminary has been abandoned since 1987 and fell into almost complete disrepair, with the result that the building remains in ruins to this day and is also subject to severe vandalism. Since 1992 the building has been recognized as a Category A-listed building in Scotland, which is the highest level of protection for a building of “special architectural or historic interest”. Although many initiatives have been launched over the years to restore the severely dilapidated building, revitalization projects have not yet been implemented. This may change in the coming years: In July 2020, the site was transferred at no cost to the new owner Kilmahew Education Trust. They specialize in educational programs aimed at young children and their families. The St. Peter’s Seminary building is envisioned to be transformed into a place that benefits the local community, while the original design is respected when renovating and repurposing the architecture. The refurbishment project will be designed by London-based architecture practice Carmody Groarke. It is not known when the work on the property will be carried out.

Classified as red-blue (endangered and listed), this building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on December 9, 2024, it is still classified as red-blue in the online database.
