DoÄŸan Tekeli / Sami Sisa / Metin Hepgüler: Istanbul Textile Traders Market İMÇ, ?–1967
- Istanbul, Turkey, Show on map
- #COM #Eastern Europe
-
One of the first modern bazar-like market developments in Turkey.Â
The project was the winning design in the second round of the Istanbul Textile Trade Cooperative competition in 1960 and was realized between 1960 and 1967. The complex consists of six interconnected blocks with a total of 1,117 shops and showcases the exposed concrete and brick typical of brutalist architecture, blending these elements with nearby Ottoman structures.Â
-
Over time, the complex was threatened and has undergone several architectural changes that have meant the loss of its original character. For example, the buildings have lost their material aesthetics as the exposed concrete surfaces have been painted. The building still appears to be substantially intact and is in use.Â
This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on October 28, 2024, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to gray (least concerned / unknown).
