Egon Eiermann: St. Matthew Church (Matthäuskirche), ?–1951

  • Pforzheim, Germany, Show on map
  • #REL #Western Europe
  • The refined use of concrete is still strongly influenced by the churches Auguste Perret designed. At the same time, a fledgling anonymous volume can be discerned here. This places it between the Classicism of the 1920s and the sober, brutalist concrete structures seen in the decades ahead.

  • Heritage protected. The church is considered an important example of post-war church construction. In addition to its architectural significance, it also has a symbolic function due to the materials used, such as rubble chippings from the destroyed city of Pforzheim which have been mixed into the concrete.

The church had to be renovated in 1974 because the covering of the concrete reinforcement was too thin and the concrete workmanship was inadequate. It was then reinforced with shotcrete. In the 1990s, the canopy over the steps and the bell tower were renovated as well. The interior has been preserved unchanged (last updated on September 26, 2024).Â
