  • Once they were commissioned, the architects traveled to Europe to see the architectural innovations of theaters there. Their tour lead them to London, [Berlin, Munich, and Ingolstadt.] (…) One year into construction, the client demanded a redesign of the stage house in order to turn it into the fully developed, multiple-use concert hall and opera house it is today. Funding of the project was interrupted for political reasons and con- struction took eleven years. Excerpt from Jesús Eloy Gutiérrez’ article in: SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey. • Today, the complex is still Venezuela’s most important cultural venue. In 2009, the Venezuelan Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural declared it a property of cultural interest. The building is in excellent condition, although in recent years, it has been used largely for purposes other than concerts.
