The Jardim Ipê School is a horizontal structure complemented by various structural details in triangular shapes, such as pointed shed roofs or brise soleil constructions. The building envelope spans a central space that organizes and integrates all its sectors. The original structure, made of exposed concrete with its closed colonnades, aimed at flexibility in both spatial and pedagogical design, allowing for different configurations according to the pedagogical requirements.

The school building is still in use today, but it has undergone significant changes. The building has been painted several times, covering the raw concrete surfaces. In addition, the open design of the ground floor, which originally allowed a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, has been altered by the addition of new classrooms. These changes have compromised the original architectural integrity, particularly the relationship between natural light and the building’s materials.Â
This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on October 16, 2024, it is still classified as red (endangered) in the online database.
