Marcel Breuer: Armstrong Rubber Company Headquarters (Pirelli Tire Building), 1968D–1970

  • New Haven, Connecticut, USA, Show on map

  • The Armstrong building is one of two major New Haven buildings by Marcel Breuer (the other being the Becton Engineering and Applied Science Center). Originally set like sculpture on a large green space, it illustrates the principal characteristics of Breuer’s style: separations of functionally different elements and a clear articulation of each. The building is organized in two sections: a two-story research/warehouse at the bottom (substantially altered in 2000) and an office block elevated above, supported at the sides by massive end piers holding the utilities and service systems. Written by Patrick Krupa

  • R&D wing and warehouse demolished in 2003 due to newly constructed IKEA. The tower has been preserved and is listed in the Connecticut Register of Historic Places.
