Sergio Musmeci: Industry Viaduct-Musmeci Bridge (Ponte sul Basento), 1967D–1976

  • At a time when it was not yet possible to make static calculations with a computer, the architect Sergio Musmeci developed this abstractly shaped bridge. Its supporting structure consists of a uniform, three-dimensionally curved shell of reinforced concrete. This shell is 30cm thick throughout and stretches over 266m. It forms four arches, each with a span of 58.8m, which merge into each other through three short, lower sections. These short sections are each supported by four foundations.

The roadway above is 287m long, 16m wide and has four lanes, but no sidewalks or bike lanes. It serves as a link between the highway and downtown Potenza and the industrial area, crossing the Basento River.

  • In use. The bridge has taken a beating due to its age and the sharp increase in traffic.
