Louis I. Kahn: Salk Institute, 1962D–1965

  • La Jolla, California, USA, Show on map
  • #EDU #North America
  • The Salk Institute complex consists of two wings with laboratories and offices, which are grouped around a central courtyard and offer a view of the Pacific. The symmetry of the complex is further emphasized by a central water channel. The buildings are entirely constructed in exposed concrete. Windows, window fronts and screens are made of mahogany wood.

As one of the most prolific mid-century architects, Louis Kahn is usually not categorized as Brutalist. However many facets of his style, especially his love for exposing the building’s structure and building materials fit squarely into Brutalist concepts and sensibilities.

  • In use, heritage protected. Deteriorated wood panels are being restored/replaced in 2016/17. Special thanks to Rohan Grover
