Marcel Breuer was commissioned to design the church in 1961. Construction began in 1964. The sacred design approach focuses on creating a profound religious experience through spatial arrangement, light, materials, and size rather than lavish ornamentation. The trapezoidal front wall of the exposed concrete church, which functions like a “banner” with a cross relief cast into the concrete, gives the it its distinctive appearance. Above it is the bell tower with three large bells that protrude beyond the front wall. The sanctuary has no windows except for a few skylights and is accessed from a slightly low balcony, which enhances the impressive experience of entering the enormous height of the nave. The sides of the entrance are decorated with red-orange and blue-green stained glass windows by Studio Roemer-Millard. The floor of the church is made of bricks and sloped like a theater, allowing for a better view of the altar. The latter is made of a single piece of white granite. Above it is a concrete canopy illuminated from below, and behind it are twelve concrete columns representing the twelve apostles.
