Hans Kammerer / Walter Belz: Parish Church St. Verena (Pfarrkirche St. Verena), 1967C–1968

  • Bright vertical concrete façades with sloping slate roofs, next to a curved concrete spiral staircase characterize the ensemble. It seems as if the expressive village church was put together from several smaller houses. The idea behind it: different functional areas laid out independently but connected to each other. Window bands are set deep into the thick concrete walls. The countless openings create a diverse interplay of direct and indirect light in the interior. Built in lightweight concrete, the church weighs much less on the clay construction base than its monumental exterior would lead one to expect. Staged eaves add further variation and optical lightness to the outward appearance of the building.

  • Originally exposed concrete painted today. Heritage protected since 2003.
