Dunelm House, Durham University's student house, is a striking exposed concrete building with a roofscape consisting of several slopes. The structure integrates harmoniously into the surrounding landscape, with the various levels and terraces cleverly utilizing the topography of the site.

“Grade II” heritage listed building. The heritage listing was preceded by a debate over the demolition of the building: In 2016, the University applied for a Certificate of Immunity from the Conservation Order (COI) and announced plans to demolish Dunelm House as part of redevelopment plans, arguing that the condition of the building was too poor and that it would be too expensive to renovate. However, opposition from a number of professionals and activists held out, a petition was organized and much more. The C20 Society appealed twice against the immunity certificate, which was ultimately successful and the building was declared a listed building in 2021.
This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on November 21, 2024, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to blue (saved).
