The Administrative Centre (AC) Groenplein in Hasselt, Belgium, has been under threat of demolition in recent years but will instead be repurposed. Initially at risk, the building's brutalist architecture sparked local advocacy efforts, ultimately leading the city to preserve its iconic façade while adapting the structure for a cultural hub. Planned to open in 2026, the transformed building will house a theater, cinema, rehearsal spaces, and a rooftop bar, supporting several arts organizations. This decision reflects a sustainable approach, preserving much of the brutalist architecture for future generations.
This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on November 4, 2024, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to gray (least concerned / unknown).
