Rifat Chadirji (IQC): Tobacco Monopoly Headquarters, 1965?–1967

  • Baghdad, Iraq, Show on map

  • The structure appears starkly monumental. Specified geometric brick elements define an architecture that appears like a fortress. In spite of prominent historic references and the lack of any revolutionary design features, the treatment of the material puts the building into the realm of Brutalism. In fact, in Banham’s words it could be described as “enigma”, a description he chose for the Markuskyrkan, noting that “It is a building that would greatly enrich the Brutalist canon if it could safely be included within it.“ The same could be said for the Tobacco Monopoly Headquarters.

  • Status unknown: Can you help?
