  • The BADEA headquarters (Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa) is an outstanding example of Sudanese late modernism in brutalist style. The administrative building is organized around a central open atrium that brings natural ventilation and daylight into the interior. Its striking façade consists of deep, prefabricated concrete alcoves that act as sunshades, filtering the glaring desert light and giving the interior spaces a subdued, even light. The strictly rhythmic structure of the façade surfaces is emphasized by sharp-edged, geometric shapes, while massive, almost sculptural concrete volumes give the building a monumental presence. The design combines functional climate adaptation with representative austerity and embodies the characteristic architectural language of the “Khartoum School,†which links modern architectural principles with regional climatic and cultural requirements.
