Van Eyck created an innovative exhibition space consisting of offset cubes of varying sizes for the gallery owner Alfred Schmela. The design is a conscious counterpoint to the dominant white cube paradigm. The walls are left unplastered outside as well as inside, while the impression is further heightened by an unusually dark shade of concrete. Aldo van Eyck was a member of the architect group Team 10, founded in 1953, that seceded from the Modernist movement. He is also viewed as the founding father of Structuralism. During renovations by the architect Günter Zamp Kelp in the 1990s the facades has been altered. Among other changes the gateway has been converted into a shop.
