Dieter Oesterlen: Christuskirche Bochum, 1956D–1959

  • Bochum, Germany, Show on map
  • #REL #Western Europe
  • A modern nave and a neo-Gothic church tower meet here. A break with the past.

The nave was destroyed in an attack during the Second World War, but the tower remained intact. Under the advice of the architect Heinrich Schmiedeknecht, Dieter Oesterlein built a contemporary new church building. Simple, without pictures, limited to the essential. A noticeable folding construction forms the ceiling and side walls. Brick walls alternate with wall-high concrete glass windows, designed by the sculptor Helmut Lander. Inside, the concrete folding ceiling is particularly effective, and a gallery at the rear end of the church allows more seats.

  • Heritage protected.

In the 90s the tower had to be renovated, with the help of donations and very probably also because of the internationally highly praised nave, the congregation managed to raise 1.85 million euros.

The church building is one of the most impressive anti-war monuments in Europe and one of the 100 most important sacred buildings. Nowadays concerts and other events are regularly held in the church hall (last updated on September 26, 2024).
