Ítala Fulvia Villa: Panteón Subterráneo (Underground pantheon), La Chacarita Cemetery, 1950?–1958

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina, Show on map
  • #REL #Latin America
  • Significant example of modernist architecture and landscape design by the pioneering architect Ítala Fulvia Villa (1913–1991). The project was developed in collaboration with Lelia Cornell, Raquel S. de Dias, Günter Ernst, Carlos Gabutti, Ludovico Koppman and Clorindo Testa. While Villa conceived the subterranean necropolis, Testa designed the sculptural Brutalist entrance pavilions that symbolize the passage to the underworld. The Pantheon contains more than 100,000 niches organized around galleries and patios that bring natural light into the underground complex.

  • In use.

In recent years, the project has received growing scholarly and public attention. DOCOMOMO International and several architectural organizations have called for its formal heritage protection (last updated on May 31, 2026).
