Roland Simounet: Musée de la Préhistoire d'Ile de France, 1976D–1980

  • Nemours, France, Show on map
  • #CUL #Western Europe
  • Perched amidst the forest, this sculptural complex is structured by precast exposed concrete slabs. Narrow gaps, protrusions, recesses and large panes of glass break up its general massiveness.

  • In use and heritage protected. The museum has been listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments (ISMH) since October 2002, and the Ministry of Culture and Communication has awarded it the ‘20th Century Heritage’ label. The building underwent an important renovation (museum closure for works in 2018) and subsequent landscape/patio interventions. Conservators and project teams treated the raw concrete façades, large glazing and internal patios as integral features, and the interventions have respected the building’s original material and spatial character (last updated on December 3, 2025).
