Willard Carl Kruger: Humanities Building, University of New Mexico, 1972D–1974

  • Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, Show on map
  • #EDU #Public #Plaster #EdgeCase #North America
  • Brutalist concrete building whose form is characterized in particular by its sculptural, irregular cubature.

  • We changed the entry from code grey to code red in December 2024 because we were informed that the building is scheduled to be demolished.

In 2020, an assessment of the building's condition reportedly identified several issues that were deemed non-repairable. These included: structural failure, frequent flooding, and various safety, code and ADA-compliance issues. Because of the assessment, the decision was made to demolish the Humanities Building and plan a new building in its place. Faculty and staff will move out of the brutalist building between December 16, 2024 and January 10, 2025 and will be temporarily housed in different buildings on campus. Demolition work is scheduled to begin in January 2025 and be completed in fall 2025. Completion of a new building on the site is planned for 2028 (last updated on December 14, 2024).
