From the outside the Nicolai Church follows a classic modernist design approach. The load bearing frame and ceiling on the inside however consist of raw exposed concrete elements that anticipate future Brutalist sensibilities in a remarkable way. It was the first German exposed concrete church.

Heavily damaged in World War 2, restored in 1962/63 and 1978. Heritage protected (last updated on September 28, 2017).
