Günter Bock: Bürgerhaus Sindlingen, 1958D–1961

  • The architectural concept of this community center was to unify construction, topography and art. It is located between the local train station and a development from the 1920s. Part of this effort are steles in front of the entrance and a terraced public square which corresponds with the stepped, jagged volumes of the building. This creates a stony, rough board formed concrete landscape that does not try to compete with the neighboring garden city but rather acts as its urban backdrop. Written by Sandra Pappe

  • Heritage protected.

During renovations in the 1980s the expose concrete façade was partly smoothed out and painted in various colors, thus destroying its coherent, sculptural appearance. The Attempt of integrating the complex into its surroundings by using colors of the neighboring garden city proved unsuccessful. Instead the alterations create an inconsistent hodgepodge of dissonant individual parts. There have been plans discussed for painting the building gray to bring the appearance somewhat closer to the original. But until today, the façade remains in yellowish and orange tones.

Classified as red-blue (endangered and listed), this building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on November 22, 2024, it is still classified as red-blue in the online database.
