Marcel Breuer: Atlanta Central Library, 1969D–1980

  • Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Show on map

  • The Atlanta Central Library presents itself as a massive, sculptural structure with a façade made of prefabricated concrete panels.

  • Renovated in 2000. The library was closed again in July 2018 for extensive interior and exterior renovations, which were carried out by the architectural firm Cooper Carry in collaboration with Vines Architects and Moody Nolan. As part of this renovation program, the installation of three rows of new large windows in the façade was heavily criticized by preservationists and architects for altering Breuer's original design. The renovation work, which cost 50 million dollars, was largely completed in February 2021.

This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on September 25, 2024, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to gray (least concerned / unknown).
