Kate Macintosh: Dawson's Heights, 1964D–1972

  • London, Great Britain, Show on map
  • #RES #Public #Brick #ClusterStructure #Sculptural #Stepped #Western Europe
  • Two slab blocks follow the topology of the hilly site. The sculptural façades allow for balconies for all flats, while avoiding a rigid, rastered appearance. Similar to Park Hill, the different buildings were originally connected with elevated walkways that are a good example of the Smithson's "streets in the sky" concept.

  • Many alterations have been made over the years. The bridge walkways have been removed, window frames have been replaced with white aluminium frames, multiple grilles and gates have been added. Nevertheless, the general brutalist appearance is still intact. The building is in use and not threatened with demolition.

This building was included in the red list, published in our exhibition catalog SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey (September 2017). After a status review on February 4, 2025, it was reclassified in the online database from red (endangered) to gray (least concerned / unknown).
