PROJECT DETAILS

Hans Hohenegger / Matthias Szauer: Volksschule Dopschstraße, ?–1974

  • Vienna, Austria, Show on map
  • #EDU #Public #Stepped #Western Europe
  • The school with its exposed concrete facade and terraces follows the concept of a residence building—the planners wanted to keep the use flexible for the future, when they expected to have less children and no more need for this school in the development. However it is still in use today. It is part of the Großfeldsiedlung development, a large area in the north of Vienna which was developed by the municipality of Vienna between 1966 and 1973. 21,000 inhabitants, mainly housed in council flats organized in highrise blocks, moved in in the first years. The development features supporting infrastructure as well: a swimming pool, kindergardens, schools, churches, youthclubs and a mall.  Special thanks to Liz Zimmermann
