  • Brutalism is a problematic idea for South Korea. Though many significant buildings of the 1960s and early 1970s evince the qualities of this term, there were very few in the Korean architectural commu- nity who even knew such a word existed. Kyungdong Church sustains many of the general characteristics of the dense packing of programs into a complex section, the yearning for expression, its ambivalent relation to a constantly changing city. Simultaneously, it stands out as a case for how architecture absorbs its social and technical conditions and provides an excep- tional narrative of its time and place. Excerpt from Hyungmin Pai’s article in: SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey. Catalog DAM + Wüstenrot Foundation, Zurich (Park Books) 2017
