Walter Ruoff won the design competition for the new Rodenkirchen city hall. At that time Rodenkirchen was still an independent city.

Ruoff won the Cologne Architecture Award in 1967 for his design. Later Rodenkirchen became part of the city of Cologne. The building was still used for administration in the district after. In 2005 the City Conservator Mr. Krings noted the importance of the building, but rejected the recognition as a memorial. The City of Cologne finally decided to demolish the District City Hall Rodenkirchen and replace it with a new building. An architectural competition for the project was held in 2018. Following a pollutant clean-up, the demolition took place in 2024 and the new building is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2027. In line with the “cradle to cradle” principle, some of the concrete demolition material from the Ruoff building will be reused in the façade cladding for the new district town hall (last updated on February 21, 2025).
