The church was built under the lead of Father Josef Kentenich, who had vowed to build a special place for adoration, if the religious Schönstatt-Bewegung (an international movement of spiritual renewal within the Catholic Church) would survive prosecution by the Nazis between 1933 and 1945. The building was delayed by post-war circumstances and dissent with the Catholic Church. In the end, it was built by Alexander von Branca and claimed to show resemblance to the large number of medieval castles along the middle River Rhine. It is built in a mixture of quarry stone walls (probably faced) and concrete elements, of which the floating ceiling is the most impressive. The first holy mass was held on September 15th 1968 by Father Kentenich, who died immediately after the mass in the sacristy. On the same spot he was laid to rest.
