Fritz Rafeiner / Anton Gnech: Office Building “Affenfelsen”, 1972–1973

  • This 11-story office building was erected in 1971/72 for the German publishing company Gruner + Jahr. The skeleton structure consists of precast reinforced concrete columns and floors. A prefabricated construction system developed in the 1960s primarily for university construction was used, which grids the building into modules, making it possible to extend or convert the building in height and width at a later point in time. The façade is essentially characterized by the balcony galleries made of formwork-rough reinforced concrete. However, the compact structure, whose height and massiveness would exceed the relation to its surroundings, is softened by its terraced form towards the banks of the Alster river. Because of its shape, the building gained the local nickname “Affenfelsen” (Monkey Rock).

  • Heritage protected since 2013. Originally exposed concrete surfaces painted later. Today it is being used as rented office space, mainly for lawyers (last updated on October 11, 2023).
