  • Sete Cidades, Azores Islands, Portugal, Show on map

  • On the edge of a dormant volcano, surrounded by dense vegetation, the gigantic concrete structure of the Hotel Monte Palace San Miguel was planned as a luxury holiday destination with sea view. The building extends as a massive, terraced, stepped structure along the ridge of a slope, with long rows of balconies and deeply recessed window axes. It had five floors with 88 rooms, including a presidential suite, four deluxe suites, four double rooms with a lounge, 27 double rooms and 52 suites. It also featured two restaurants, a bar, three conference rooms, a games room, a hairdresser’s, a bank, a nightclub in the basement and several boutiques.

  • Only used for about one year, the building was abandoned around 1990 and has been decaying since. There are plans to refurbish and reopen the building (last updated on April 8, 2026).
