The State Theatre, built on Pretoria’s Old Market Square, is Africa’s largest theater complex. It features a wide range of typical Brutalist forms and surfaces, from interlocking reinforced concrete beams and big masses to textured exposed concrete façade finishes created by the use of textured formwork.

In 2000, the State Theatre was closed because of financial mismanagement. It reopened on April 4, 2001 (last updated on May 19, 2026).
