  • The com- plex forms were supposed to underscore the im- portance of applied science, which was developing rapidly at that time. This was Leviash’s only completed construction amid a whole host of blueprints and designs created in the spirit of the architectural fantasies of Antonio Sant’Elia, the Japanese Metabolists, and Paul Rudolph. The building also reflected the Soviet architects’ excellent knowledge of the work of Alvar Aalto, an idol of world architecture who was equally renowned in the USSR. … There were more than fifty different sizes of windows, leading to criticism, professional legends, and popular anecdotes. Excerpt from Nikolai Vassiliev’s article in: SOS Brutalism: A Global Survey. Catalog DAM + Wüstenrot Foundation, Zurich (Park Books) 2017
