Gigantic shiny window areas and golden tiles form the front. The only concert hall new building of the GDR is located in Leipzig opposite the opera. A glass front supported by steel girders and slightly tilted forward allows a view to the inside and outside. Staggered masses characterize the building, the expressive glass structure forms a projecting body and thus also functions as a roof for the entrance area. The large hall sits on the three-storey substructure; yellowish Cotta sandstone already signals it on the façade. This is structured by vertical recesses and thus takes up the lines of the steel construction. The sandstone can be found on the balustrades of the lower floors, which extend as terraces at the rear of the building and are supported by columns on the ground floor. Protruding elements of the same material decorate the balustrades. To the right of the main entrance, a backyard leads to the smaller hall (Mendelsohn Hall). Both halls have a diamond-shaped floor plan and are staggered next to each other.Â
