Jan Rave / Rolf Rave: Haus Plettner, 1970?–1971

  • Berlin, Germany, Show on map
  • #RES #Western Europe
  • On a lakeside property in West Berlin, this residential building was commissioned by the estate dealer Hans-Peter Plettner. It is the only residential building in Berlin that is consistently and completely made of exposed concrete.

The entire residential complex is divided into two cubic house bodies, only 7.99 m wide, with a walk-on flat roof. They are connected by a covered open corridor arranged on the side. Inbetween, a swimming pool is located. All walls of the house were cast on site from heat-insulating lightweight concrete and have been left raw on the outside. The fine and very neatly finished relief of the vertical formwork boards is a key design feature of the façade, but also in some of the rooms on the inside. Finishing details worth mentioning include: a multifunctional interior and exterior fireplace, and lightweight elements used in the living space as wall shelves or closet space.

  • Heritage protected since June 2012. From 2012 until 2014, a major overhaul and restoration to the 1971 condition of the exposed concrete façade was undertaken (last updated on May 7, 2024).
