  • Together with the adjoining community center, the church of St. Raphael forms a striking ensemble on the northern edge of the site, where its slightly elevated position gives it a prominent urban corner position at the intersection of Kurt-Schumacher-Ring. The building was constructed following an architectural competition in 1967 and was begun in 1972, with the consecration taking place in 1973.

The building is characterized by its clear geometric shapes, flat sloping roofs and the use of sand-lime brick for the exterior walls and prefabricated concrete elements in the attic areas. The church offers space for 248 people and is characterized by a simple but carefully designed interior, which was created in close collaboration with the artist Hanns Joachim Klug. Among other things, he designed the windows, door handles, altar, crucifix, statue of the Virgin Mary and other liturgical elements, creating a complete interior work of art. The interior is complemented by works by master goldsmith Raimund Lange and Stations of the Cross by Prof. Kalmbach.

The combination of functional community center and sacred space as well as the uniform architectural design gives St. Raphael a special position in the development of post-war churches in Lower Saxony.
