Friedrich Wilhelm Kraemer: Sechseckbau (today: Student Center Schleswig-Holstein), 1963C–1966

  • Kiel, Germany, Show on map
  • #EDU #Western Europe
  • A windowless concrete hexagon on a glass base. From the northern part of the square neighboring student house a glazed bridge leads to this hexagonal extension, which houses a stage, a recording studio and a music room. The small theater, which can accommodate 110 visitors, has a variable stage and is technically equipped to allow many design experiments.

The façade of the exposed concrete structure is decorated with a swarm of small round aluminum panes, whose constantly changing interplay of light and shadow makes it appear less closed.

The shape of the hexagon is also reflected in a network of numerous wagon-shaped concrete planters arranged around the building and in the floor plan of the large Audimax building nearby.

  • Heritage protected since 2008. Recently renovated. In 2019, it was partially closed for around 3 to 4 years due to fire safety deficiencies. The Infopoint and the cafeteria in the base are not affected (last updated on October 8, 2024).
