The church is part of the new foundation of OrÈ™ova following the construction of the Iron Gate Dam, which flooded the old town and the former church. The new building was a state-approved exception in atheistic communist Romania and was built as the central religious building of the newly constructed city. The building is often referred to as a giant concrete tent, which is particularly distinctive due to its cross-shaped skylight roof. A curved covered roof and sculptural relief exposed concrete walls create an architectural sculpture withÂ
a strong long-distance effect in the urban space.
From the outside, the church appears massive and closed, while the interior appears surprisingly open due to the lighting.
Murals by Gabriel Popa are an integral part of the spatial concept, replacing the traditional iconographic decoration with a contemporary, narratively continuous representation of the Via Crucis. -
