Johannes Jacobus Margarethus (Jo) Vegter: Water Tower, –1958

  • Dokkum, Netherlands, Show on map
  • #PUB #Western Europe
  • Innovative is the pronounced austerity and the use of sliding formwork in the construction of the tower. Painted formwork was used to make the reservoir on the inside as smooth as possible and the tower on the outside dirt-repellent. In the original design, plans for a restaurant space on top of the 37 meter high tower were included. Architect Vegter wanted to create the optimal use of the height, striking location and powerful image-defining function of the water tower in the silhouette of Dokkum.

  • The post-war water tower of Dokkum has been designated as a national monument. On behalf of the Minister of Education, Culture and Science, the Cultural Heritage Agency assigns this status to special objects that are considered to be of national importance. It is the first and only water tower from the reconstruction period that is listed in the Monuments Register.

    In use.
