Colwyn Foulkes and Partners: Theatr Ardudwy, 1973

  • Harlech, Great Britain, Show on map
  • #CUL #Western Europe
  • The irregularly polygonal building is pushed sculpturally into the slope with staggered levels and opens up to the landscape with a curved, fan-shaped façade. Exposed concrete, copper cladding and dark glass surfaces determine the material design.

  • The theatre was closed in 2018 due to problems with the roof and damages of the concrete form work on the outside of the building. Suggestions have been made to demolish it. The arts council is against this happening. In 2021, there were plans to reopen and restore the building under a new owner. However, these plans fell through. There is currently no indication of any progress on the renovation or reopening of the theater. The building has been on the Theatres Trust’s “Theatres at Risk” list since 2019. Future unclear (last updated on February 13, 2025).
