Teg Church is located in the district of the same name in Umeå and was built between 1967 and 1969 by the construction company Lindén & Danielsson, based on designs by Stockholm architect Carl Hampus Bergman. He had won the architectural competition in 1963, and created a modernist–brutalist church made of raw reinforced concrete with a separate bell tower.
The latter is narrow and square in plan, rising as a closed shaft with a smooth surface before unfolding into a sculpturally articulated top section that holds three bells.
The church building itself is closer to a rectangle in plan and is composed of several cubic volumes. Both inside and outside, the exposed concrete surfaces are characterised by a distinctive formwork pattern: a sequence of upright rectangular fields, each bearing the imprints of vertical board formwork. The windows are very slender and narrowly divided. The interior is laid out in the style of a three-aisled basilica and offers seating for up to 500 people. It is known for its good acoustics.
Behind the church, an L-shaped annex built in red brick accommodates additional parish rooms. -
In use. Heritage protected.
In recent years parts of the building, inside and out, have been coated in a warm yellow-pink hue. The ceiling received an acoustic treatment, and some alterations were made to the windows, but the structure and spatial concept otherwise retain their original appearance. The campanile remained in its original exposed concrete apperance. The church was granted listed status in 2011 and is recorded in the register of the Swedish National Heritage Board. Any future modifications require approval from the county administrative authority (last updated on December 8, 2025).
